History WAPZ began broadcasting on October 2, 1954 under the call letters WETU. The station was located just north of Wetumpka, Alabama with a 180 foot tower and 5,000 watts power on 1250 KHz. The owners, Elmore County Service Company were very proud that WETU was the very first radio station licensed to Elmore County. In 1964 WETU moved to its present location at 2821 US Highway 231. Elmore County Service Company constructed a large combination studio, office, and transmitter building, and increased the coverage of the station by erecting a new 300 foot tall radio tower. The original format of WETU was country and western music, with local on-air personalities. Several owners later, the station was purchased by William White and former NFL great and College Football Hall of Famer Johnny Roland. Roland was also a member of the Chicago Bears coaching staff in 1985-1986 when the Bears won Super Bowl XX. Roland and White changed the call letters to WAPZ, and began playing gospel music. JW LLC became the station owner. WAPZ soon began programming a portion of its daily broadcasts with Christian programs, religious teaching and locally originated talk shows. WAPZ is now in its 53rd year of serving the Tri County area. WAPZ broadcasts 24 hours a day and simulcasting on 95.7 FM. 2009 WAPZ became Soul Classics playing old school soul and R & B.
